Inherited from the Proto-Slavic language, the word lyubitel’ from the XI century to the present day is used in the meaning «one who has the inclination for something, interest in something». Since the beginning of the XVIII century till the early XIX century the word was used in the meaning «one who is experiencing the feeling of love for someone, lover». Apparently, since the beginning of the XIX century the word has been used in the meaning «amateur, non-professional, doing anything for fun».
