Pronunciation and Grammar Norms of the Russian Language in Dictionaries of the National Dictionary Fund
Abstract:
Since 2022, linguists have been working on the creation of the federal state information system “National Dictionary Fund” (NDF) — an electronic lexicographic resource that brings together authoritative dictionaries of various types: spelling, orthoepic, explanatory, etymological, phraseological and synonym dictionaries, etc. The preparation of dictionary entries for electronic publication aims to simplify the website's usability for non-specialists: grammatical forms traditionally presented in dictionaries as endings (e.g., конь, -я, -и, -ей) will be displayed in full (конь, коня́, ко́ни, коне́й), and the markup of dictionary entries will enable searching within the body of an entry and creating filtered selections based on specified criteria. The article explores the potential of the NDF in studying variability in accentual (до́ску/доску́) and grammatical (тра́кторы/трактора́) language norms. Understanding language evolution is particularly important for school students and teachers, since exam assignments do not include words with accentual or grammatical variants, which creates a false impression of the immutability of norms. The NDF will also provide linguists with the opportunity to study the lexical representation of words in diachrony: observing how a word's reflection in dictionaries of different eras has changed in terms of spelling, pronunciation, and grammar. Thus, the resource will become a valuable tool for anyone interested in the Russian language.
