This article analyzes the history of the origin of the expression «I am no poet…» that at the times of Pushkin grew into the crucial issue in the discussion upon social importance of poetry and that vastly anticipated the emergence of the N.A. Nekrasov’s declaration «You can be not a poet, but you should be the citizen».
